Confessions of a Hunger Games skeptic.

I have to admit: I didn't think I'd like The Hunger Games. No matter how many people said it was awesome, I doubted. Maybe it was the lack of a pretty cover. (The cover's great in its own right and totally appropriate for the book, but pretty it is not.) Or maybe it was because it was sci-fi. But I just delayed and delayed reading it.

Finally, primarily because of Frankie's insistence, I reserved it at the library. I began it...oh, Saturday at around 7pm. Hooked, immediately. I spent Saturday night with my best friend, then came home Sunday morning and devoured the rest of it.

Seriously, I don't know how you people were able to wait for the sequel for all this time! I sent a swift prayer of gratitude to the gods of YA noveldom that Catching Fire was already out. I bought it today, and I'm forcing myself to write this post and actually get things accomplished before sitting down to read it. And honestly, I can't go to bed tonight without finishing it.

Suzanne Collins, if serendipity or fate or Google Alerts leads you to this post, I must say it: thank you. Your writing is absolutely fantastic, and I'm sorry I waited this long to find that out!

What's your Hunger Games story?

  1. We must all bow down and worship at our invisible Suzanne Collins altar because The Hunger Games is GREEEEAAATTTT (Tony the Tiger thinks so too). I'm so glad you finally got into it!!!

  2. I felt the same way about the book, Donna! I really didn't want to read it but I finally had to bow to peer pressure and check it out. Man am I glad I did. One of the best books I read last year! Now I just have to force Laura to read...

Can't wait to hear what you think of Catching Fire!

  4. I agree what a great book The Hunger Games was, thanks to Stephenie Meyer's site, that's where I first heard about it. It is extremely addictive, I'm halfway through Catching Fire and so far so good, I look forward to your review :)

  5. Well, I'm lucky enough to work in a bookstore and the Scholastic rep knows I like sci fi and fantasy. I also pushed Suzanne's first series (Gregor the Overlander) to other indie booksellers. So... I actually got to read HUNGER GAMES in manuscript form. Months before the ARC came out. That was way cool. But it made the wait for CATCHING FIRE even longer for me. Because they weren't letting us booksellers read the manuscript of that one! I was lucky to get an ARC.

I love the voice in these books. And the chilling look at the future. And the fast pace. Glad you gave it a chance, Donna. Definitely among my favorites.

I remember my friend talking about The Hunger Games while I half-listened. I never heard everything she said and somehow I assumed it was a Vampire Book. Later on, I read a teaser written by a fan online, read the first book and instantly became hooked. Waiting for Mockingjay was agony. Ironically, Mockingjay itself was also agony, but in a good way. Anyway, I deal with skeptics like I used to be all the time now. The longest it has taken for me to convince someone to read it is a year and a half, and she finally did, after I had managed to make our whole class read it and she felt left out (I'm 15). I now have a complete speech memorised to give to skeptics, and it works really well :) Oh, an afterthought: I find that the guys in my class were the biggest skeptics of all, but once a couple of them read the books, they all did :D
